Preparing a treatment plan that meets
your needs for a long-term, healthy smile
Dental implants are a team effort. Dr. Tymkiw will work with your dentist and perhaps a prosthodontist and consult with you to determine where and how your implant should be placed. Depending on your specific condition and the type of implant chosen, your periodontist will create a treatment plan tailored to meet your needs.
Single tooth – one implant and crown are used to replace a single tooth.
Sinus Augmentation – to ensure your implant is successful, the quality and quantity of the underlying bone is very important. The upper back jaw typically suffers from insufficient bone and because it is also very close the sinus, augmentation in this area is often necessary. As well, if you have been missing a tooth for an extended period of time or have periodontal disease, you may not have enough bone remaining to support the implant.
During the sinus augmentation, Dr. Tymkiw will expose the bone, then a small circle is cut into the bone. Into this circle, Dr. Tymkiw places bone particles, which will graft onto your own bone and regenerate the lost bone and tissue. You can discuss the various options for bone graft material with Dr. Tymkiw
The bone is generally allowed four to 12 months to develop before the implant can be placed. After the implant is placed you can expect a further healing period until the crown is placed and you have a functioning tooth. In some limited cases, the implant may be placed at the same time as the sinus augmentation procedure.
What can I expect after the dental implant procedure?
After treatment, Dr. Tymkiw will meet with you for a few post-op visits to ensure healing is progressing. He will also communicate with your dentist or prosthodontist as you prepare for placement of the crown. Periodic follow-ups will help us monitor your implant, teeth, and gums. Taking care of an implant is the same as your original teeth and a brushing and flossing are still the best way to keep your teeth happy and healthy.
